Jonathan was born in Massachusetts in 1968, the son of Marlene and Allan Knight. He grew up in the Dorchester area of Boston with his 5 brothers and sisters and numerous foster children his mother took in. He shot to fame in the late 80's with the group New Kids On The Block. From 1986 to 1994, Jonathan was a member of the American boy band New Kids on the Block. Before their split in 1994, the band had sold over 80 million records worldwide where Knight left during the tour of their 1994 album
